Cheerful creatures inhabit nursery designs
Imagine a world where frogs play tennis and sit down for tea. Or rabbits attend ballet class and dress to impress. Kelly B. Rightsell, a former elementary school art teacher turned full-time artist, lives in this whimsical world every day. A Greensboro transplant from Richmond, Va., Rightsell has created a business born from imagination, and as the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention.

Her business, Kelly B. Rightsell Designs, boasts a powerful combo: sentimental value and staying power. Rightsell creates all of the original paintings and designs and manufactures them here in Greensboro, along with a line of stuffed animals and ceramic plateware sets. And since the company's birth, it has branched out into the marketplace by licensing several of its products.

"Every day I discover more and more beautiful things." - Claude Monet

Did you know that towards the end of his life, Monet was nearly blind from cataracts but continued to paint from memory? I am awed by art - whether it is a Monet masterpiece, the art of nature or a child's scribble in a coloring book; there is truly a sense of beauty in everything that surrounds us. Like a wide-eyed kid on Christmas morning, my appreciation for art stems from a sense of delight and wonder. A true tour de force and an amazing artist; today I discovered Kelly B. Rightsell.

Art with a Heart: Choosing Nursery Artwork That Will Help Your Baby Explore the World
Epregnancy Magazine, September 2004

“Art in a nursery is something that can be passed down to the next generation,” says artist Kelly Rightsell. “Memories of childhood are the most valuable ones we have. I try to create designs that have a special place in a child’s room that they will remember, art that is appropriate for a baby but also mature. Always keep in mind that it is your child’s room, and they are the ones looking at the walls.” Rightsell’s original artwork combines the sophistication of Van Gogh and other master impressionists with childlike imagination and subject matter like bunny tea parties and elephants on parade. “Your nursery walls should spark both your baby’s and your own imagination.” According to Rightsell, there are ways to create a whimsical feeling without having Bugs Bunny and Yosemite Sam all over the walls. For example, oil paintings, which have an air of refinement, can feature child-friendly subject matter. “Children love animals, so that’s always a safe bet,” Rightsell says.

“We get so involved in designing the perfect nursery for our clients,” Angela explains. “We can’t help but become close to them and get excited about each step of their pregnancy.” Kelly expresses similar thoughts, saying that she’s in the same mindset as her customers since she has children of her own. Her designs, which include rugs, wallpaper, fabric and ceramic sets, are inspired by everyday life with her family.

Greensboro, North Carolina, artist Kelly Barnes Rightsell loves books. "I have all my childhood books. They made a big impression on me," says Rightsell, who specializes in lithographs for children but also creates furnishings and tableware for the Essex Collection. Her "I See the Moon" products are based on a childhood rhyme she fondly remembers: "I see the moon, and the moon sees me; God bless the moon, and God bless me." Featured on a hand-hooked wool rug and a decoupaged child's chair, the central motif is a nattily dressed rabbit embracing a smiling moon.
